Knowledge is Power

Celiac disease is an immune reaction in the small intestine triggered by gluten. Most people don't realize they have celiac disease because the damage to your small intestine happens slowly over time. The symptoms vary between individuals, and symptoms may start at any after they start consuming gluten. Over time, the immune system's reaction against gluten in the small intestines leads to damage to the intestine lining, preventing nutrient absorption.
Celiac disease is hereditary and, therefore, might run in the family. The hereditary pattern is unknown. However, if you have a first-degree relative with celiac disease, you have a 1 in 10 risk of developing celiac disease.
The celiac test is the first part of discovering if you have celiac disease. Your healthcare provider will use the test results in combination with your symptoms, family history, your medical history to determine if you have celiac disease. Currently, there is no treatment. However, individuals with celiac diseases follow a strict gluten-free diet.
